Presentation

We started the class by finishing the education kills creativity video. Then, Geoffrey, Winnie and Patrick did their prezi presentation and Jessica, Angel and I went after them. Honestly, the presentations were really alike.

Presentation

Today's class was short since it was a Friday. We basically talked about the presentation we had to do on the ping pong launcher, took a look at everyone's launchers and watched a video about how education kills creativity.

Launch

After half an hour of more modifying, we finally launched the ping pong balls in Applied Skills. Every group got one test shot and three actual shots. My group got 15 feet for all the tries which wasn't very good but not that bad either.

Modifying

Today was supposed to be just for modifying our launchers but since ours didn't really worked. We rebuilt another model that's a lot simplier. Too bad it doesn't launch that far. We did the one we found on YouTube with the double paper clip and elastic band and added some stuff to it to make it better.

Building

We finally built the trebuchet today. The trebuchet didn't exactly turn out as we planned it to be. The wood was to hard to penetrate through and the foam was too weak to hold much. Since we had to change so much materials, the finished product wasn't that good. In fact, it doesn't launch very far. Thankfully, we have another period to modify it and make it better.

Last Draft

Today is the last day for us to finalize our drawings before building the ping pong ball launchers next class. Jessica and I talked a little about the materials in the design while Angel finished the orthographic drawing. All we need to do now is add the measurements into the drawings and we'll be done.

Sketching

We really didn't spend much time on the sketches today. Instead, Mr. Zhuang talked about how simple and easy sketches are to draw versues spending a longer period of time drawing a sketch on the computer with programs like Google Sketchup.

We were supposed to hand in the ten sketches today but Angel forgot them at home along with the orthographic drawing. Let's hope she remembers them for next class. For the Google Sketchup sketch, Jessica's almost done. She just needs to put in the texture and colour of the trebuchet.

Sketches

Today, some Synergy Grade 9 people came to Mr. Olson's classroom to tell us more about the Buskerfest so we didn't have much time to work on the sketches. Jessica is almost done with the sketch on the Google Sketchup and we also handed in the 10 rough sketches. Now, we only need to write down the measurements for the sketch on the orthographic paper.

LOLZ, I just read the post below, and your welcome, Tiffany. I actually think I'm going to enjoy working with Google Sketchup. I mean, there will be a lot of frustration involved, but at AS today, I really felt like I was getting the hang of it. So I don't know, many I'll love after we're done this...

Google Sketchup

Jessica and I were making a 3D model of one of our ideas on Google Sketchup while Angel was drawing another idea on the orthographic paper. I never knew something could be so complicating. I am so glad Jessica agreed to do the Google Sketchup draft. I had to watch her do the same thing three times before I understood what she was doing. The tutorials weren't much help either because they don't tell you which button to press.

Design

Today, we learned about the steps of designing a chair and argued for about three quarters of the class about the definition of a chair. It was a really interesting arguement.

Library

We had another library block again today. We got some of our sketches done and did some more research on how to build catapults. There were some really good ones on the internet but we don't have the materials to build those catapults. They were like three times my height.

Jessica, Angel and I met at the Oakridge Library this morning hoping to do more research on how to build catapults and trebuchets. There is not a single book in the library on how to build them, we even asked the librarian for help. Since we couldn't find books on the topic, we decided to do some research on the computer. We found a few things that were helpful and managed to finish our three sketches.

Asking an Expert

Today, I saw one of my old friends that was originally from Churchill and IB, and is now on his second year of university. They had to the the same, or sort of the same experiment, when he was grade 9. He said every one who used a trebuchet totally failed, the thing they were launching barely went a few meters. In order for a trebuchet to work, they had to have something heavy to launch, and when the thing being launched is heavy, it's easier for gravity to pull down on it and it'll fall too early. So I guess now, we've decided that we're doing catapults, which is great because now that we know what we're going to use, it's easier to find information on it!!

First Library Block

Today, Jessica, Angel and I found some information on how to build catapults and trebuchets. It was surprisingly simple. We searched up some catapults and trebuchets on the internet and Leonardo da Vinci made some really complicated ones. We have some ideas jotted down but we still have a lot of work to do.
